Staff Accountant

Job Overview
Drive the monthly close process by ensuring all journal entries are booked and necessary accruals are calculated. Analyze departmental P&L's and provide detailed variance explanations of actuals to budget and prior year. Assist in Capex reporting and provide ad hoc reports related to specific capital projects. Be able to research NYS tax law in order to prepare monthly prompt tax payments and quarterly sales/use tax returns.
Participate in monthly close process including preparation and recording of adjusting journal entries for the facilities, track, fleet, cleaning, and security departments
Analyze departmental profit and loss reports and explain variances to budget and prior year
Analyze expenses, including salaries and benefits, particularly those related to the repair and maintenance of the facilities
Calculate capital labor and prepare monthly journal entries;
Actively speak with department managers/heads in order to better understand what is behind the numbers presented in the P&L
Maintain and reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts
Participate in research of technical issues and documentation of findings in relation to capital assets
Participate in budget and forecast preparation;
Prepare sales tax returns and estimates;
Prepare, document and compile data and support in response to audit inquires of various authorities, e.g. NYS Department of Taxation, NYS Office of General Services
Assist accounting manager with current and future capital and maintenance projects and expenditures received from department managers
Prepare reports for internal and external users;
Perform ad hoc projects and tasks as needed.
Utilize various software systems to develop accurate and timely reporting methods;
Initiate change to current processes to better support the financial statements
Education: Bachelor's Degree required in Accounting
Experience: Strong understanding of accrual accounting principles

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
